About 15 years ago, I developed a chronic lower back problem caused by worn lumbar discs. In 1998, I had an episode that was so severe that I thought I would end up in a wheel-chair. After trying various therapies, I eventually decided that self-help was the only way forward. I read an article about Pilates and soon started attending the world-renowned Body Control Pilates centre, run by Gordon Thomson in London (Gordon has published several popular books on Pilates with Lynne Robinson). The exercises became an integral part of my daily routine and within six weeks I was able to resume my favourite sport of mountain biking, an extreme sport.
Five years ago, I moved to Australia with my family. Although it is possible to maintain a routine at home, Pilates is more than just a series of exercises it also about learning new skills. I needed to find a good teacher in Brisbane if I was to maintain motivation and continue developing my abilities. However, I was cautious about signing up with anyone who was not fully qualified. At that time, there were very few Pilates studios in Brisbane , but one day I drove past the Pilates on McGregor sign and took a note of the phone number.
I have now been attending classes with Peter White for about three years. The patronage of the rich and famous such Madonna, John Cleese and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and many film, TV and sports identities may have made Pilates very fashionable, but you will find no such airs and graces in his studio. Peter is an excellent teacher with a very down-to-earth and accessible style.
I have recently started attending matwork classes with my 13-year-old son. Being in a class with other people, all working at the same skill learning level, gives a nice sense of community.
I have no hesitation in recommending Pilates on McGregor. In my opinion, it is probably the best Pilates studio in Brisbane .
